Around 5 million children in the United States have undocumented parents. This means that, especially under the current president, if their parents are detained for being illegal immigrants, there is a chance that the children could lose their parents due to deportation.
The difficulty here is that the children are often times sent to foster homes. This doesn’t help the citizens of the United States or the immigrants as these foster homes are crowded enough. Sending children that have parents into foster care just uses up resources that can be used on children that have no parents and need it more.
Because of Trump’s legislation to crack down on illegal immigration regardless of if they are parents or not, not only would the parents be separated from their children but they could also permanently lose parental rights.
Our verdict: We think that it is important to take into account that some illegal immigrants have to care for their children and there should be a leniency policy taking that into regard.
