On Wednesday morning, the White House Released a Statement endorsing the GOP immigration plan known as the Grassley Bill. The plan is said to adhere to the White House’s “four pillars” on immigration: creating a pathway to citizenship for the 1.8 million Dreamers in the U.S., limiting family-based migration, ending the diversity lottery, and allotting $25 billion dollars to increase boarder security including the building of a wall.
In his statement Trump said “I am asking senators, in both parties, to support the Grassley bill and to oppose any legislation that fails to fulfill these four pillars – that includes any short-term ‘Band-Aid’ approach.” Most of the Republican senators seem to back the bill, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. On the other hand, Democrats are said to not support the bill. In order to pass into law, the bill would need the support of nine Democratic senators if every Republican senator also supported.
Our Verdict: Trump has threatened in recent comments that this is the Senate’s last chance to come up with a lasting proposal for immigration. This most recent statement, reiterates his plan to only accept legislation that encompasses his “four pillars” of immigration. For Democrats, this Grassley Bill is not an acceptable compromise. Democrats are unanimously against abolishing the diversity lottery, limiting family-migration, and the border wall budget. The Senate will have a near impossible time passing this bill into legislation, due to the need for Democrat support, leaving us again with no lasting immigration plan.
