In the aftermath of Tuesday’s terrorist attack in New York City leaving eight dead, Donald Trump is calling for the end of the diversity lottery program that brought the man who committed this attack to the U.S. from Uzbekistan in 2010.
The diversity program, established in 1990 under George Bush Sr., focuses on distributing immigrant visas to countries traditionally underrepresented in immigration to the United States. Each year, 50,000 diversity visas are distributed, although almost 15 million people apply. This program has been under scrutiny by Republicans, and was almost ended in 2013 when a group of eight lawmakers sought to overhaul the entire immigration system, but was blocked by the House. Chuck Schumer, who Trump blamed on Twitter for the inception of the program, was one of the senators that passed the plan through Senate. Chuck Schumer responded to Trump’s comments by calling out Trump’s proposed cutting of anti-terrorism funding.
Trump also used this terrorist attack to further promote his plan of “merit-based” immigration, and his plan to end “chain migration”, in which people use their immigration status to help family members come to the United States.
Many people criticized Trump’s hypocrisy in using divisive, politicized language less than 24 hours after the attack, after the Trump administration had disparaged those using the Las Vegas attack to push for gun control.
Our Verdict: Trump is once again employing scare tactics and incorrect information to push his immigration agenda. Tuesday’s terrorist attack was a tragic occurrence, and we hope that more will be done to help combat terrorism in our nation.
