Rumors of a New Immigration Bill in 2018

Back in early September Trump announced that he was putting an end to the Obama-era immigration program know as The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The beneficiaries of this program are known as Dreamers. Many people were upset over this announcement due to the fact that this program benefitted children brought here by their parents in the hopes of a better life, and all of the recipients are law-abiding citizens. Due to this push back Trump has changed his tune. Now he doesn’t want to completely get rid of this program, but he wants limitations put on other aspects of immigration into the U.S.

In exchange for continuing the DACA program, to help protect more young immigrants, Trumps wants a beefed up immigration security and limitations put on chain migration. These limitations would make it so that citizens or permanent legal residence can only sponsor spouses or unmarried dependent children for green cards. However, this will take months of negotiation in Congress, so we will have to wait and see how things shake out.

Our Verdict: The Congress and the President need to work out their plan for DACA as soon as possible because this program is set to expire in early spring. Putting this negotiations off will leave this immigrants in a state of limbo, where they do not know whether they will be allowed to work and live in the U.S. There needs to be a bipartisan effort here to get this deal done quickly.
