California Democrats, who currently control all levels of state government, have vowed to resist President Trump’s strict immigration policies in a legal manner with bills aimed at limiting how much private businesses can cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Insofar the state policies have been aimed at limiting what police can do to help immigration authorities and providing additional state services and support to immigrants who are in the country illegally. As of Monday May 29th, two bills that advanced in the Assembly are taking aim at private businesses. Within it lies a measure that would bar landlords form disclosing tenants’ immigration status' or reporting them to immigration officials. The bills prohibit public and private employers from letting immigration agents come into their worksites or view their employee files.
Our Verdict: There is a lot of support for this bill, especially the Democrats in the state government. Even though there has been evidence of low income Californians being threatened by tenants over their immigration status, it is likely this bill will be passed. We can hope that it will be then be used as precedent in other states implementing such progressive immigration policies.
