As many know, DACA is to be repealed and congress has 6 months to come up with a new solution regarding child immigrants. An estimated 800,000 child immigrants will be displaced because of the repeal which is cause for concern regarding their current status. It is unknown if they will be deported or if they will be able to renew their DACA program.
The DREAM act seeks to protect those displaced by DACA by giving them full citizenship so long as they adhere to DACA's programs. This act would be impenetrable by the presidency as it is law and therefore can only be changed by congress, meaning that it would provide significantly more protection than DACA could in the past. In addition, it provides a roadmap for future "DREAMers" on how to get citizenship at a more accelerated pace from permanent residency to a green card to full citizenship.
Our Verdict: We hope this act is voted upon favorably in congress. However, there is solace in knowing that if this one doesnt pass there are a dozen more that Democratic congressmen and women are willing to introduce.
