This past week marked the start of President Trump’s executive order to crack down on the illegal immigrants living in the United States. While he pledged to only deport illegal immigrants with criminal records, during the raids this week he also arrested law abiding immigrants with no criminal history. This is a departure from past raids conducted under the Obama administration, where they only took into custody undocumented immigrants who were dangerous criminals. These raids were conducted in Atlanta, New York, Chicago, the Los Angeles Area, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The homes of these immigrants and their work places were raided by officials from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Officials from ICE denied that these were raids, instead they referred to them as routine immigration enforcement actions.
However, Immigration activist have said that these raids were conducted in more than those 6 areas, they cite raids like these to have happened to Florida, Texas, and Northern Virginia. Law abiding undocumented immigrants are scared of being arrested and deported, for no reason good reason. Many believe that these raids were conducted in retaliation of 10 major cities, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, staying by their agreement to uphold the policies of sanctuary cities.
Our Verdict: Trump’s attempts to take away sanctuary status from these areas is a blatant violation of the constitution, he is over reaching in his powers as president. San Francisco was the first city to sue Donald Trump over his actions to defund sanctuary cities, which is a violation of the 10th amendment, which protects the sovereignty of local jurisdictions. This just further goes to show that Trump does not know the laws of our nation and is not willing to protect them. Even as an undocumented immigrant you should know that you do have rights.
