A panel dedicated to immigration at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, went off track as one policy analysts attempts to show the benefits of immigration were met with shouted insults and jeers.
David Bier, an analyst with the libertarian Cato Institute, detailed research concluding that immigrants have lower crime rates than native-born Americans and contribute significantly to the economy. Despite his attempt to make a logical argument, both his fellow panelists and members of the audience responded with disbelief and anger. Though the panel was supposed to focused on the DREAMer population, panelists and audience members took the time to enumerate their fears over immigrants.
VERDICT: It is truly unfortunate to see the attempts of an analyst using data being shot down by fear-based reactions. Yet, there is clearly a tremendous amount of distance before the panelists as well as the audience members can put aside the fear tactics and look at the scientific data.
