With the current political climate one would expect the number of people becoming naturalized citizens to be decreasing, however the opposite has occurred. This time last year the number of applications for citizenship was 725,925, now that number has risen to 783,330. What has caused this sudden surge of applications. A lot of has to do with our current president’s rhetoric on immigration.
Many immigrants who have been living in the U.S for years just with a green card or some other type of legal status to live in the U.S are scared that they are going to be deported. So, many are now applying to become citizens to get more peace of mind and the right to vote. This has been the first time in 20-years that the number of citizenship applications hasn’t dropped after a U.S Presidential election.
Donald Trump’s antics to limit the number of people immigrating to the U.S has failed in a sense. While he has tried to make it more difficult by increasing border security and cracking down on other immigration procedures; he has in fact caused more immigrants to become legal U.S citizens. It is ironic that he thought his hate filled speeches would stop people from coming to the U.S, when in fact he made the immigrants already legally in the U.S to become citizens.
Our Verdict: I believe that anyone who has lived in this country as a law-abiding, contributing member to our society should have every right to obtain citizenship status. It is their right as residents to have a say in who makes the laws in this country and who they want to lead this country. In a sense, I am glad Donald Trump’s comments backfired, and lead to more immigrants to become U.S citizens.
